In today’s globalized world, being multilingual can give you a leg up. Students in other countries are receiving strong multilingual education, and America must do more to ensure our young people can compete in the 21st century economy.
One way that our leaders can help is by recognizing high school graduates who are bilingual. The Seal of Biliteracy program encourages and recognizes high school students who achieve proficiency in English and at least one other language. 36 states and the District of Columbia already have Seal of Biliteracy programs in place in order to do just that.
I ask that you support this movement by signing on to the Bilingual Education Seal and Teaching Act (BEST Act, H.R.3119) With all 50 states plus the District in the process of setting up Seal of Biliteracy programs, the BEST Act seeks to consistently implement Seal programs across the nation. The BEST Act establishes a competitive federal grant program to help states implement a Biliteracy Seal program.
Helping states nationwide adopt a Biliteracy Seal program will better prepare our children to succeed in the global workforce and sends a clear signal that our nation is seriously committed to ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to learn English and other languages.
I urge you to cosponsor the Biliteracy Education Seal and Teaching Act (H.R.3119).
