Elementary Foreign Language for Bilingual Education

Spanish

This project plans to develop a model K-5 Spanish language program, and to establish a long-term relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW), which will provide for the training of future and current elementary schools teachers with add-on certification in Spanish. The strategy is a new type of "limited immersion approach" with involves the inclusion of both English and Spanish-speaking students in Spanish language classes during the regular school day (30 minutes 4 to 5 times a week). The second strategy is called "teacher training through peer student teaching." A new form of teacher education first tested in Canada, through which teachers in training are able to begin teaching the subject matter immediately, without the need for a conventional cooperating teacher.
