STUDY ABROAD:
A vehicle to improved language
proficiency and global awareness
Foreign language teachers at all
levels of instruction would probably
agree about the importance and value of
study abroad and have encouraged their
students to participate in such programs
at some time during their academic
careers. The choice and location of the
program has often been an individual
decision with advice from the student's advisor(s) and the study abroad office
at the academic institution.

JNCL-NCLIS' Board of Directors began
focusing on study abroad issues during
their meeting in January 2008 and the
discussion was continued at the May 2008
Delegate Assembly. Participants from
both meetings suggested that JNCL-NCLIS
provide a source for information
gathered from the field.
With the assistance of the session
participants, a preliminary list of these
resources with short annotations is
provided in the "Principles for Managing
Study Abroad Programs" section to the
left. We are interested in
being as inclusive as possible; however,
commercial travel/study companies will
not be included. If you have additional
sources in the three
areas listed to the left, please contact
info@languagepolicy.org.
